Q & A with Colin

Here are some recent questions that I've received from my clients about their training:

Q:  I'm working out every day and I'm still not seeing any results, why isn't it working?
A:  I would suggest you check your diet.  It's 75% of the battle, so you can train as hard as you like, but if you're not fueling your body with the proper nutrients, it's a losing battle.  Write yourself a food diary for a week, so you get a better idea of what you're putting into your system.

Q:  I train hard every day and I can't put on any additional mass, how come?
A:  You have to eat more.  Eat.  Eat.  Eat.  But make sure it's good healthy protein that helps you build lean muscle and not junk.  Also, because you're training harder, you will have to consume carbohydrates (stick to complex carbohydrates if possible), as you want your body to use them for energy and use the protein you eat to build muscle.

Training and Health Tips: Q & A with Colin

Q:  What should I eat after a workout?
A:  You should consume protein to help repair your muscles and good carbohydrates to replenish your glycogen stores (energy stored for our fight or flight response).  I like to have chocolate milk or a protein shake immediately after my workout.  Then I'll have a meal that consists of good carbs and protein.

Q:  What should I eat before a workout?
A:  Try to eat some form of carbohydrates before your workout as they provide you energy to give it your all during a session.  Here are a few things I tend to eat before my workouts:  fruits, a leafy green salad or my favourite (especially before playing sports) is a bowl of whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce.

Training and Health Tips: Q & A with Colin

Q:  How do you manage not cheat with your eating?
A:  I do cheat, everybody has their vices, but I try to use discipline when it comes to "treats" by watching my portion size or only having them once a week.  I love slurpees!

Q:  Can I bulk up and trim down at the same time?
A:  It's difficult to build lean muscle mass, so I normally recommend focusing on one or the other.  You can do it, but it will take alot longer to see the desired results.

Q:  How do I just lose the fat around my stomach?
A:  You can't target train when it comes to trimming fat.  Your body will trim the fat off your entire body evenly when you start doing cardio, etc.  So doing fifty situps every night won't necessarily give you a flat stomach.

Training and Healthy Tips: Q & A with Colin

Q: What do you eat?
A:  I try to eat mainly meat and vegetables and avoid processed carbs.  If I do have carbs, it's usually whole grain and complex carbohydrates.  However, when I go to my parents for dinner, I do have white rice, I can't avoid it, I am Chinese after all.  Besides, my mom would kill me if I didn't have at least some of her rice!

Q:  How often do you train?
A:  I train at least 3 times a week, even if it means a short half hour workout.  I try not to work the same body parts back to back and have a rest day in between if I'm feeling really sore.

Q: Do you do cardio?
A:  Yes, I do cardio, but only once a week.  I personally hate running on treadmills or using bikes because I find it extremely boring!  I'd rather go for a run outside or play a sport.
